Penetration Grade Bitumen

Penetration grade bitumen is unique for road construction in various environmental conditions.

These grades of bitumen are named due to their level of hardness and consistency of bituminous materials, which leads to the classification of bitumen in a range of grades from 30 to 120.

Penetration grade bitumen is a special kind of material used in making roads. It’s called “penetration grade” because it tells us how hard or soft the bitumen is. This helps us know which type is best for building roads in different places and weather conditions. They give the bitumen numbers like 40, 50, 60, and so on, to show how soft or hard it is.

They figure out the hardness by poking the bitumen with a needle in a test. If the needle goes in a lot, the bitumen is soft. If it doesn’t go in much, the bitumen is hard. For example, when you hear “bitumen 60/70,” it means the first number is the minimum softness, and the second number is the maximum softness.

These types of bitumen can change when it’s hot or cold. When it’s hot outside, they get soft, and when it’s cold, they get hard. Bitumen 40/50, 60/70, 80/100, and 85/100 are thick, black materials that come from a process called extraction.

In short, penetration grade bitumen (40-50, 60-70, 85-100, 80-100) is used to make roads, and its numbers tell us how soft or hard it is.

Bitumen components

The bitumen components are classified into four classes of compounds:

• saturates, saturated hydrocarbons, the % saturates correlates with a softening point of the material

• Naphthenic aromatics, consisting of partially hydrogenated polycyclic aromatic compounds.

• Polar aromatics, consisting of high molecular weight phenols and carboxylic acids

• Asphaltenes, consisting of high molecular weight phenols and heterocyclic compounds

The naphthenic aromatics and polar aromatics are typically the majority components.
